Safe and Effective Skin Resurfacing for Wrinkles, Sun Spots, Melasma, Actinic Keratosis (AK) & More
It’s ironic how many of the enjoyable activities we did in our youth have now led to fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation concerns. Years of fun in the sun and laughing as well as our health and heredity can lead to conditions that, although reminiscent of our youth, don’t help us look the slightest bit younger. When it comes to finding treatment that fights against aging, you have options. One of which is Fraxel laser resurfacing, which will help you reverse those noticeable effects of aging and take years off of your appearance. At Ventura Institute of Dermatologic Arts, we use Fraxel laser treatment as a way to help you achieve smoother and clearer skin in a minimally invasive manner. We also customize your treatment plan so that you participate in a regimen suited specifically for your skin type and cosmetic concerns.

What Does the Fraxel Laser Treat?
One of the biggest benefits of Fraxel laser treatment is that it can target various cosmetic concerns. Wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, melasma, scarring and other skin imperfections can all be treated with the Fraxel® laser. The laser works by penetrating the topmost layer of skin in a pixelated formation without impacting the surrounding skin. Collagen and elastin are stimulated in these specific areas only and work to resurface the skin to remove imperfections. Your body’s natural induction of collagen acts as a healing agent for the small, thermal wounds inflicted onto the skin by the Fraxel® laser and replaces dead skin cells with a new, healthy layer.
The Fraxel is used to improve:
- Fine line wrinkles
- Crow’s feet and forehead lines
- Acne scarring
- Skin pigmentation
- Actinic Keratosis (a pre-cancerous skin condition)
- Uneven skin texture
- Age spots/sun spots
- Skin lacking elasticity
- Enlarged pores
Fraxel® gives you the non-invasive treatment that you are looking for while still providing you with real and noticeable results. Treatment can be applied onto all skin types and easily fits into your lifestyle.
What Does the “Fractional” Mean?
Let’s Start with Ablative and Non-Ablative
First, let’s start with the two main categories of skin rejuvenation procedures: ablative and non-ablative. Ablative treatments typically use a high temperature to vaporize unwanted tissue (age spots, uneven textures, etc). These can be very effective, but require significant downtime, such as lots of redness and peeling. Non-ablative treatments, meanwhile, have very short downtime– maybe a day or so of minor redness, at most. The trade-off is that commonly require numerous treatments to give patients more modest results.
And Now, the Best of Both Worlds: Fraxel
Fraxel is truly unique, and offers the potency of ablative treatments with the gentle safety and reduced recovery time of non-ablative lasers. This means dramatic results wihtout hiding out for a week (or more) to recover and hide redness and heavy peeling.
How Can this Be?
This is where the “fractional” comes in! Fraxel uses thousands of microscopic laser columns – each just one-tenth the diameter of a hair follicle to treat a fraction of the skin at a time without affecting the surrounding tissue. This technique not only leaves your skin in better shape right after the treatment, but it stimulates the production of younger, smoother, healthier skin to replace the damaged tissue. This takes years off your skin. Since Fraxel stimulates your body’s natural ability to generate collagen and skin cells, results typically take 1-3 weeks to be visible.
What to Expect when Getting Fraxel Treatments
With the variety of skin conditions the Fraxel is able to treat, you would think that each session takes hours to complete. In reality, each treatment session lasts for up to 45 minutes, with smaller treatment areas only requiring 15 minutes of your time. In order to produce the most effective results, we recommend receiving between one and five treatments over the period of a few months so that your body’s natural collagen has enough time to restore your skin. However, even when your treatment is completed, collagen will continue to heal your skin for up to six months. With each additional treatment, you will notice that your skin feels tighter, smoother and looks noticeably younger.
During your procedure, you will feel a slight burning sensation as the laser comes into contact with your skin, and afterwards your skin may look as if it has a light sunburn. We recommend wearing sunblock in the coming days post-treatment to protect your newly exposed layer of skin. Over the next week, dark spots will begin to appear on your skin in preparation for peeling, but will dissipate as the skin begins to slough. This period of recovery may take up to 10 days, and Dr. Karlsberg can recommend gentle facial creams to help speed up your recovery and reduce visible signs of the healing process.
The specifics of your treatment plan will vary depending on you particular skin condition(s) as well as the severity. However, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Karlsberg or his Physician’s Assistant, Michele, in order to determine whether Fraxel® laser treatment is right for you. With a skin assessment as well as a discussion about how you’d like to improve your skin, we can design a precise treatment regimen just for you. Our goal is to provide customized treatment for every patient so that they can experience results that make them feel like their best self.
