XEOMIN®

About Xeomin®

As we continue to age, facial lines begin to look more and more prominent, especially in regions where the muscles are heavily exerted. These wrinkles can hurt our self-esteem and make us appear older than we really are. Many patients who desire more dramatic results will resort to plastic surgery to eliminate fine line wrinkles. Others, however, would prefer less invasive techniques and subtler results. The use of neurotoxins for facial wrinkles has been around for decades and is a safe and effective method for producing smoother skin. At Ventura Institute of Dermatologic Arts, we offer a variety injectable treatment options depending on your specific needs. One injection we recommend is XEOMIN®, which specifically targets the muscles in the face that are responsible for producing wrinkles in the glabellar complex.

Your Muscles are Making You Look Older

With continued use, your facial muscles begin to build a memory system that helps them determine how to move, and through the years, as you make facial expressions, your muscles contract in ways that create a lasting impression. You may notice that certain facial folds remain after you smile, squint or frown, which can result in your skin looking aged or your demeanor appearing tired or angry. When your muscles begin to alter your appearance, it’s time to find a treatment option that can restore your youthful qualities.

Revamp Your Skin with XEOMIN®

XEOMIN® is a prescription medication used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Specifically, it is used to treat frown lines or wrinkles that form along the glabellar region of the face. The injection targets the wrinkles that are created by muscle movement which, over time, produce folds in the skin. Like both Dysport® and BOTOX®, XEOMIN® uses a component of the botulinum toxin type A and acts similarly by blocking the neurons in the tissues that are responsible for muscle contraction. The result is less muscle exertion and a reduction in wrinkles.

How is XEOMIN® Different?

With the amount of neurotoxins on the market today, it’s becoming more difficult to determine which treatment option is right for you. BOTOX®, Dysport® and XEOMIN® all essentially provide the same aesthetic results; the difference lies in the way they are processed. With XEOMIN®, only the therapeutic component of the toxin is used when injected into the muscles. The toxin undergoes a manufacturing process that removes unnecessary proteins that do not play a role in cosmetic treatment. It is known to be a highly purified neurotoxin that is effective when reducing muscle movement.

Choosing between BOTOX® , Dysport® and XEOMIN® is a matter of your own discretion along with a recommendation by Dr. Karlsberg or his Physician’s Assistant, Michele. There are some instances where the prolonged use of one neurotoxin can lead to tolerance in the muscles, and the introduction of a different injection can restore the original cosmetic results. However, each injection provides natural enhancement that is no better than another other formulation.

Your Consultation and Procedure

If you are interested in treating your forehead lines, then we recommend coming in for a consultation where we can assess the wrinkles in the skin and determine whether XEOMIN® would be an effective solution. Both Dr. Karlsberg and Michele are expert injectors who will create a comprehensive treatment plan based specifically on the severity of the frown lines on your skin. At VIDA, we enjoy using injectable treatment options because of their ability to be customized for your cosmetic goals. Unlike surgery that provides more dramatic and permanent results for aging skin, injectables create more natural results that can be adjusted depending on your personal aesthetic. It’s a more flexible option for those who are looking for slight enhancements to their skin.

The injections are administered directly into the procerus and corrugator muscles, which are the muscles responsible for producing your frown lines. Your treatment session should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete with side effects that may only include slight redness and swelling around the injection site. Within two or three days, you will begin to notice the effects of XEOMIN®, however full effects won’t appear until after two weeks. Because XEOMIN®, like other neurotoxins, is a temporary injection, follow-up appointments will be necessary in order to maintain your results. However, in time, your muscles should grow accustomed to their lack of exertion, which will result in you needing less of the injection. We recommend receiving touch-ups every four to six weeks, which is when the muscles will typically begin to produce wrinkles again.

If you would like to learn more about XEOMIN® or any of the other injectable treatment options we have available, please contact Ventura Institute of Dermatologic Arts and schedule a consultation. We would be happy to perform an examination and determine whether treatment with neurotoxins is right for you. Call today to get started!
