Feeling Self-Conscious About Your Neck? Consider Neck Rejuvenation

Many people blame facial wrinkles and sagging cheeks for an older-looking appearance but the neck can play a role, too. Fortunately, neck rejuvenation can provide tighter, younger-looking skin.

Dr. Peter Karlsberg and his physician's assistant Michele Ayans provide top-notch innovative cosmetic dermatological care at the Ventura Institute for Dermatologic Arts located in Ventura and Camarillo, California. With a combination approach employing both art and science, they create personalized treatment plans to address a variety of issues including neck rejuvenation.

Neck rejuvenation

Just as the face undergoes changes as we age, so can the neck. Everything from lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin to skin discoloration and the collection of neck fat can lead to an older-looking appearance. The good news is there are a number of treatment options available to help address these problem areas.

The process begins with an in-depth consultation to review your medical history, a physical examination of the face and neck, and a discussion about goals and desired outcomes. From this, a customized plan is created that could include one or multiple types of treatments to ensure the best possible results.

Treatment options

Different problems require different solutions. The good news is, we have many tools in our kit to address a multitude of issues.

Botox and fillers

Botox® injections can help with the appearance of an aging neck, particularly neck bands known as platysmal bands, while fillers can aid in restoring volume that gets lost as we age. Both treatments involve no downtime, so normal activities can be resumed immediately following the procedure. They can be done individually or in combination, depending on the person's needs.

Skin tightening

Sagging skin can be another sign of aging but there are treatments available that don't involve surgery or recovery time. Thermage® and ThermiTight® are two options that use radiofrequency energy to firm and tighten the neck. During this safe treatment, the thermal energy is directed deep into the layers of the skin, which encourages the body to create new collagen for a younger, more supple appearance.

Fat removal

Fat can collect in the neck, particularly under the chin and jawline. Several treatment options exist, including CoolSculpting®, which involves eliminating fat bulges by freezing, micro liposuction, which can get rid of fat with small incisions and cannulas, and Kybella®, which can be injected to lessen the amount of fat.

Clearer skin

Blotchy patches and discoloration of the skin can be helped using laser energy from Fraxel® laser resurfacing. This procedure can also stimulate production of collagen and elastin for tighter, smoother skin.
