Nearly 10,000 people receive a diagnosis of skin cancer every day. While it may be alarming, this diagnosis can be life-saving. At Ventura Institute for Dermatologic Arts, Peter Karlsberg, MD, offers both diagnosis and effective skin cancer removal. Protect your health by getting your skin checked for cancer. Schedule your skin cancer check by calling the office in Ventura and Camarillo, California, or booking your visit online.
Skin cancer is caused by the abnormal growth of the cells that make up your skin. This abnormal cell growth can cause any of the three types of skin cancer:
You probably already know that sun exposure, and sunburns in particular, heighten your risk for skin cancer. Practicing sun safety is one of the best things you can do to defend yourself against this extremely common type of cancer.
Skin cancer is extremely treatable when it’s diagnosed early. Dr. Karlsberg recommends getting your body checked annually for signs of skin cancer.
Although some types of skin cancer look problematic (e.g., basal cell carcinoma can look like a bleeding sore), others are hard to spot. Melanoma, for example, can simply look like an asymmetrical mole.
Dr. Karlsberg is extremely experienced in identifying the signs of skin cancer. In fact, he’s locally renowned for this diagnostic ability. If you want to be able to rest easy knowing the status of your skin health, all you need to do is schedule an appointment at either of his offices.
During your skin cancer check, Dr. Karlsberg inspects your body for any signs of skin cancer. If he finds any, he offers effective treatment — including Mohs surgery — to fully remove the cancer so it doesn’t impact your overall health.
Mohs surgery is a potentially multi-step surgical process that ensures the cancer is fully removed from your skin. Dr. Karlsberg is a board-certified Mohs surgeon.
During your first Mohs procedure, Dr. Karlsberg removes a thin layer of the skin where the cancer is present and sends it to the lab for testing.
If the bottom portion of the layer he removed still shows signs of cancer, he repeats the process, again testing the margin around the removed skin. Once Dr. Karlsberg is satisfied that every cancer cell has been removed, your Mohs surgery is complete.
Dr. Karlsberg performs Mohs surgeries as outpatient procedures using a local anesthetic. This surgery allows him to ensure that the cancer is fully removed, while minimizing the impacts on your healthy skin.
